Comparison of Time Intensity of Using Facebook with Grade Point Average of Politeknik Caltex Riau Students

Abstract
This survey is to know about the average of intensity time in using facebook for college students. This survey was done by giving questionnaires to 30 college students. This research was done to know the comparison between average time in using facebook that was done by students of Politeknik Caltex Riau with the grade point average that he/she got. It is hoped that from the comparison that was done, students that got the grade point average below standard was not because they were spending their time for playing social media such as facebook.

Introduction
Nowadays, the use of computer is not only for data processing but also starting as an entertainment function. Many social sites sometimes make us addicted for using internet as entertainment. The example of social site with many facilities that was given by the sites is facebook. This social site has confiscate attention of many people especially in Indonesia. This social site was used by all ages that not only young people but also old people. They do not want to miss to use it. The advent of facebook has given many advantages and disadvantages.
The research study released by Ohio State University showed that students who use facebook spent less time to study and get low score than the students who did not use this social site. According to the report, 79% the college students mentioned that this social site does not affect their learning. The research of Ohio State University found that 85% of undergraduates use facebook, while 52% of graduate students have a facebook account. The fact of this research is that facebook user that usually studies 1-5 hours per week have average score about 3 to 3.5, but the students that do not use facebook that study 11-15 hour per week have average score about 3.5 to 4.
The research data by Ohio State University motivate us to do a research towards the students of Politeknik Caltex Riau. Will the research result match the research data by Ohio State University? Will the influence of social media affect the grade point average of Politeknik Caltex Riau students?

Method
-Participants
There were 30 college students of Politeknik Caltex Riau in this study.
-Materials
Information was gathered using manual calculation. Participants were also asked to report their average hours of using facebook per week and their GPA.
-Procedure
Each participant was asked to complete the questionnaire package.

Results

Informations from the graph :
1. The college students who play facebook 1-10 hours per week and have GPA above 3.00 are 18 students.
2. The college students who play facebook 1-10 hours per week and have GPA under 3.00 are 5 students.
3. The college students who play facebook more than 10 hours per week and have GPA above 3.00 are 3 students.
4. The college students who play facebook more than 10 hours per week and have GPA under 3.00 are 4 students.

Discussion
The result of our survey is that the college students who don’t spend a lot of time using facebook (not more than 10 hours per week) have higher GPA than the college students who spend their time using facebook more than 10 hours per week.
Only 10% of college students who spend their time using facebook more than 10 hours have GPA above 3.00.

Conclusion
In internet there were many social sites that given by user. So, we as students have to be smart to choose what is good or bad. Don’t let criminal cases that happened in virtual world make us become a victim or a suspect.
We have to be smart in dividing our time which is our duty as a student, so our time for studying is not spent to online in the social sites.
